The Rotary Club of West Seattle sponsored a trip to Guatemala, departing May 23rd and returning on June 2nd, 2024. We assembled 110 stoves and water filters in the impoverished village of Esperanza Blanca Flor, with support from the village and local staff of Hands for Peacemaking (www.handsforpeacemaking.org). We also provided simple toys and school supplies for 135 children as well as eyeglasses for the villagers.
The 800 residents of Esperanza Blanca Flor live in 110 homes and primarily support themselves by sustenance farming. These stoves will help prevent burns and respiratory diseases, cook more efficiently to save families time searching for fuel, and lessen the environmental impact of cooking with wood fire pits.
The stoves are designed by Burn Design Labs on Vashon Island and are manufactured by the Hands for Peacemaking staff in Guatemala. The cost is $300 per stove and $50 per water filter.
