March 10: SAYA MORIYASU, SADAKO REIMAGINED
Come to our March 10 club meeting to hear Saya Moriyasu, the Seattle based sculptor commissioned to create "Sadako Reimagined," a new sculpture to be installed at Seattle Peace Park this year. Learn more at sadakorenewalproject.com.
Saya Moriyasu is a graduate of the University of Washington’s BFA program, she has completed residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and Pilchuck Glass School. Drawing on her Japanese father’s traditions and her mother’s Oregon roots, Moriyasu creates intricate installations and sculptures, rooted in spirituality, nature and storytelling, and beautifully captures Sadako’s enduring message of peace, resilience and share humanity. Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in major Pacific Northwest collections, including the Seattle Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, and the Wing Luke Museum.
February is Rotary’s month dedicated to Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution, one of Rotary’s core Areas of Focus. Rotarians around the world are united by a shared belief that lasting peace begins with understanding, compassion, and courage to see our common humanity.
As we reflect on the meaning of peace, we are honored to hear from Saya Moriyasu, Seattle based sculptor and the commissioned artist to create “Sadako Reimagined”, the new sculpture that will be installed at Seattle Peace Park in 2026.
A young Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki, became one of the most powerful symbols of peace in the world. At age two, Sadako survived the atomic bombing, but years later developed leukemia from radiation exposure. While in the hospital, she began folding one thousand paper cranes, inspired by the ancient Japanese belief that doing so would grant her wish—her wish for healing, and for peace. Although Sadako passed away at age twelve, her story and her cranes inspired a global movement of hope and reconciliation. Saya Moriyasu’s work, rooted in spirituality, nature, and cultural storytelling, beautifully captures Sadako’s enduring message of peace, resilience and shared humanity.
